The 5Ive Key Habits of Smart Dads: A Powerful Strategy for Successful Fathering
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (April, 1994)
Author: Paul Lewis
Average review score:

A great resource for fathers, and fun to read too.
I'm not much on self-help books or parenting books in general, but this is a great book for helping fathers gain a perspective on their significance in the lives of their childern. The model of the "wheel" seems a little strange at first, but it really helps you visualize the points the author makes. The book has a slight conservative Christian lean, but it never becomes over-powering or preachy. A great book to have around when you need a little injection of wisdom to help you make it through those tyring moments of fatherhood.

Action Rhymes for You and Your Friends
Published in Paperback by DK Publishing (April, 1900)
Author: Stephen Lewis
Average review score:

Familiar songs and some new ones too.
You will immediately recognize songs like The Wheels on the Bus or Row, Row, Row Your Boat, but have you heard of Peter Hammers or I Hear Thunder? I have fun memories of teaching: Six Little Ducks and cutting out little duck visuals in college until late in the night. This book brought back memories of teaching and really will encourage learning.

The book/tape set is nice because children can learn the songs before they can even read. Later, they can read the book and teach their friends the fun rhymes. Children will especially enjoy: She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain. Down by the Station sounded very familiar and I was wondering if my mother might have had fun singing this to me when I was a young child. I thought I heard her voice in the song, well, in the back of my mind while it was playing.

Nice English flavor and accents. The rhymes encourage playfulness and silliness. Oh, to be a kid again! Children are comforted by music and there is no reason you couldn't sing some of these songs to a baby. Some of them are quite funny because the singers improvise a bit. I really don't remember the ending to Row, Row, Row Your Boat and here it has three verses.

The pictures show how to act out the rhymes so this not only becomes an exercise manual for kids ;), it also serves as a babysitter.

You might also enjoy Nursery Rhymes by Debi Gliori and Playtime Rhymes (a similar book/tape set).

Adventures in the Dream Trade
Published in Hardcover by NESFA Press (April, 1902)
Authors: Neil Gaiman, Tony Lewis, and Priscilla Olson
Average review score:

Yes, Neil's a genius, but not for going on a book tour.
I'd love to read a weblog about Neil writing American Gods. How did he forge all those sources into a new story that feels true? But this is a weblog about an author going on tour. Honestly, who cares? Neil's a genius, but this is not what he's a genius for. Stick with the stories. Skip the blog.

The Adventures of Midnight Son
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (November, 1997)
Author: Denise Lewis Patrick
Average review score:

The Most Fun in an Historical Novel
Midnight Son leaves the plantation and his family under the cover of night on a horse named Dohomey his Father provided for him for this purpose. The story follows Midnight on his journey to Mexico where he has freedom and then back into America as part of a cattle drive. We follow this 13 years old as he winds up on a ranch and eventually becomming a cowpoke.

We read this story out loud as a family with our 8 and 10 year old grandson and granddaughter. Both loved Midnight's adventures and I loved all it was teaching them about the last years of slavery in America and the life of a cowboy. Midnight is a very brave young man who shows great courage as well as helping so clearly teach children about life in the 1860's as America struggled with the issue of slavery. If you remove all the marvelous history lessons intergrated in the story, you still have a very compelling main character and a great adventure story.

Midnight Son's story is a wonderful book to share with your children.

The Aeneid
Published in Audio CD by Naxos Audio Books (December, 2003)
Authors: Virgil, Cecil Day Lewis, and Paul Scofield
Average review score:

Read with lyrical precision and dramatic grace
Aeneid is a uniquely presented, abridged translation and audio CD presentation of Virgil's timeless work of classical literature concerning a group of refugees from the ruined city of Troy, who seek a promised land yet are continually thwarted by the goddess Juno. The classic narrative saga poem is ably translated into English by C. Day Lewis and read with lyrical precision and dramatic grace by skilled actor Paul Scofield (additionally supported by the voices of Jill Balcon, Toby Stephens, Geraldine Fitzgerald, John McAndrew, and Stephen Thorne). Classical music enhances this grand work of great literature resulting in an emotional and highly recommended listening experience that endures the test of time.

Aging and Mental Health: Positive Psychosocial and Biomedical Approaches (5th Edition)
Published in Textbook Binding by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (12 January, 1998)
Authors: Robert N., Md. Butler, Myrna I. Lewis, and Trey Sunderland
Average review score:

This is a superb text for all helping professionals.
I used an earlier edition of this text during my own doctoral training. That it has been revised and updated speaks to its excellence as a comprehensive text covering all aspects of aging and mental health. I will be using this text in my counseling classes because it is chock full of useful information, (practical, medical, and psychological,) and emphasizes " the dignity and worth of each individual irrespective of age." Professional counselors, psychologists, and all those who work with aging adults need to read this book and keep it as a ready reference. As the population ages we need to understand the special needs and attributes of older adults, as well as how aging is viewed in a diverse society.

Airborne and Allergenic Pollen of North America
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (November, 1999)
Authors: Walter H. Lewis and Vincent E. Zenger
Average review score:

Simply, the very best book on plants and pollen.
I am the author of Allergy-Free Gardening, published by Ten Speed Press, and I have read a huge number of books about pollen grains and the plants that produce them. There are many fine books on the subject but by far, Airborne and Allergenic Pollen of North America, by Dr. Walter H. Lewis, is hands down the best.
The writing here is complex but easily understandable. The material and research in the book are deep and break considerable new ground. Today, as allergies continue to skyrocket, as deaths from asthma grow larger every year, I find it hard to understand how this book has gone out of print!
This may not be a book for the average lay person but for any serious student of allergies, horticulture, and pollen, this is a must read. I'd think that every allergist would want to own a copy of Airborne and Allergenic Pollen of North America.
The lead author, Dr. Lewis, is considered by his peers in biology to be THE medical botanist. He is after all, also the author of the seminal work, Medical Botany, from Wiley& Sons publishers. But unlike many who write about allergy, Lewis also knows a great deal about plants. He is, among many other things, the Senior Botanist at the Missouri Botanical Gardens.
I can not recommend this wonderful book highly enough.
